A rhetorical question is a question asked to make a point rather than to solicit an answer.
It’s a common device in public speaking and writing that engages the audience’s thoughts or emphasizes a point.
“Isn’t it time we all got serious about mastering the art of public speaking?”
That’s a rhetorical question. I’m asking it so you can answer it in your head, for yourself. I’m not aiming to receive a chorus of “Yes” answers in the social media chat!
I could have said “Think about the importance of mastering the art of public speaking,” but that’s not nearly as provocative.
The answer in your head could very well be, “Don’t tell me what to do!”
When you ask a rhetorical question (and then pause to give your audience time to reflect on the answer), they’re much more likely to engage and consider your point.
